Breaking Barriers, Building Belonging: Honouring the 2025 Award Recipients

On June 5, 2025, the Saint John Newcomers Centre gathered with friends and partners to celebrate something truly special. This year’s Breaking Barriers Award went to Jeannette Savoie and the Faculty of Law at the University of New Brunswick—a recognition of their extraordinary efforts to open doors for newcomers and help them feel at home in our community.

Celebrating Courage and Collaboration

The Breaking Barriers Award isn’t just a trophy; it’s a heartfelt thank you to those who work tirelessly for inclusivity, equality, and progress. As Mohamed Bagha, Managing Director of the Saint John Newcomers Centre, shared at the ceremony:

“Today, we celebrate not only the spirit of unity and progress but also the remarkable achievements of those whose commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering belonging has left an indelible mark on countless lives.”

For three years, Jeannette and the Faculty of Law have been at the heart of our efforts to make justice accessible for newcomers. Their commitment is more than professional—it’s deeply personal. They’ve made legal support available to those who need it most, empowering newcomers with knowledge, guidance, and a sense of security as they build their new lives in Canada.

Impact of the Legal Clinic

What does this partnership look like in action? It means:

  • Legal clinics where newcomers find answers, support, and hope.
  • A stronger Saint John Newcomers Centre, able to offer services that respect both culture and the law.
  • New, lasting connections with legal professionals and institutions across New Brunswick.
  • Law students learning firsthand about the challenges newcomers face, growing into more compassionate professionals.

As Mohamed put it, “Their contributions have been foundational to the growth and success of our Legal Support Program. Icons like Jeannette and the Faculty of Law inspire us all. Their work breaks barriers and builds community.”

Words from Jeannette

Accepting the award, Jeannette spoke with warmth and gratitude:

“This recognition transcends a mere achievement for UNB Law; it symbolizes the collaborative efforts between UNB Law and the Saint John Newcomers Centre in our commitment to fostering inclusivity and support for newcomers.”

She highlighted how much the clinic experience has changed her students’ lives:

“Many students who have had the privilege of working with newcomer clients have shared how this experience has profoundly altered their perspectives on justice and fairness. It has illuminated the privileges we enjoy as Canadians and as legal professionals, while also highlighting the numerous barriers that newcomers encounter.”

Jeannette also expressed her heartfelt thanks to the SJNC team:

“I would also like to convey my heartfelt appreciation to Mohamed, Doaa, Remu, and the many other staff members who contribute to making SJNC the welcoming environment it is. Without your support through follow-ups, provision of interpreters, and assistance for our clients, effective communication would not have been possible.”

Looking Forward

The Breaking Barriers Award is about more than a single moment—it’s a celebration of resilience, kindness, and the belief that together, we can accomplish remarkable things. As Jeannette reminded us all:

“As we progress, let us remain steadfast in our efforts to dismantle barriers, embrace diversity, and cultivate a community where everyone feels welcomed and valued.”

Congratulations to Jeannette and the Faculty of Law. Their dedication continues to make Saint John a more inclusive, welcoming place for all. Their story is a reminder that when we work together, we can build a community where everyone belongs.
