The Ukrainian Association of Saint John recently honoured Zarui Larionova, Settlement Advisor at the Saint John Newcomers Centre, for her commitment to volunteering. Zara, who immigrated to Saint John, NB, in the Spring of 2022, was awarded the coveted Volunteer of the Year Award for her tireless efforts to help the Ukrainian immigrant community.

A Ukrainian immigrant herself, Zara has been involved in numerous projects to serve the Ukrainian community during her duty as a Settlement Advisor at the Saint John Newcomers Centre. From helping to facilitate the Centre’s language classes for children to organizing information sessions, and other social and wellness programs, Zara has consistently dedicated herself to serving the Ukrainian immigrant community.

“Zara is a shining example of what it means to be a volunteer,” said Mohamed Bagha, the Managing Director of the Saint John Newcomers Centre. “She is always willing to go above and beyond helping those in need and has been an invaluable asset to our organization. We are thrilled to recognize her with this award.”

Lina Gharbiya, the Saint John Newcomers Centre Settlement Lead, said, “Zara's work for the Ukrainian community through the Newcomers Centre has been nothing short of remarkable, and the award is a testament to her hard work and dedication.”

Zara felt grateful and humbled to have received the award, saying she was honoured to be recognized for her commitment to helping others. “Volunteering has always been a passion of mine,” she said. “I am so grateful to be able to give back to this incredible community.”
