The Saint John Newcomers Centre offers a comprehensive range of programs and services designed to support newcomers in their settlement and integration journey. Our goal is to provide practical, supportive, and empowering resources that help individuals and families thrive in their new community.

Information & Orientation

Useful Noon Hour

Provide informative and interactive sessions on practical topics essential for newcomers. Covering areas like safety, public transportation, and accessing local services, these workshops equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate their new environment confidently and integrate smoothly into the community.

Banking information sessions

The SJNC in collaboration with several banks in Saint John, offers information sessions to newcomers about the Canadian banking system, mortgage, savings and loans, how to manage credits cards, fraud prevention etc.

Financial Literacy

Financial Literacy Workshops at SJNC equip newcomers with essential money management skills. Topics include budgeting, saving, credit, banking, and understanding Canadian financial systems. These interactive sessions empower participants to make informed financial decisions and plan for a secure future.

Know Your Rights

Know Your Rights (KYR) Program at SJNC educates newcomers on the Canadian legal system and their rights and responsibilities. Led by legal experts, the interactive sessions cover key areas like employment, housing, healthcare, and education. Participants engage in discussions, ask questions, and gain practical knowledge to navigate life in Canada confidently.

 

Mental Health and Wellness Support

Wellness Café Powered by BMO

Engage in group sessions on wellness and coping strategies led by our settlement advisors and mental health professionals. These supportive sessions help newcomers navigate emotional challenges and build resilience in their new environment.

Citizenship and Language Preparation

Canadian Citizenship Classes

Canada Citizenship Classes at SJNC help newcomers prepare for the Canadian citizenship test. Led by B. Whitney, a former UNB professor, the 5-week online program includes two sessions per week with 10 mock tests and follow-up discussions. Participants receive comprehensive instruction, practice test simulations, and feedback to enhance their understanding and readiness.

Conversation Groups

Weekly French and English conversation groups providing a relaxed setting for language practice. These sessions help newcomers improve their communication skills and build social connections.

Language Buddies

Language Buddy Program at SJNC pairs newcomers with volunteers for weekly one-on-one English practice in a friendly, informal setting. Newcomers can improve their language skills and connect with the community, while volunteers make a meaningful impact by supporting language learning. Sessions are held at cafés, libraries, or the SJNC office, fostering cultural exchange and mutual growth.
